In the year 1998, the senate of the R.C. Diocese, Kottar, decided to form a committee to organize and mobilize the human resources of the lay people of the Kottar Diocese, to establish higher educational institutions, like Medical College, Engineering College, Nursing College and Arts and Science College.
On 05.05.2001, a Committee was formed to take the necessary steps to get approval from the Government, to start a Nursing College at Chunkankadai. It was to be the combined effort by Thiruthuvapuram and Mulagumoodu vicariates.
On 26.10.2003, the first inspection was conducted by Director of Medical Education at the Animation centre, Bishop’s House, Nagercoil for the Government permission.
Realizing the immediate need for the infrastructure of the nursing college, the Ceremony for foundation Stone Laying was held on 12.04.2004, presided over by the Bishop Most. Rev. A. Leon Dharma Raj (Late) at Chunkankadai. The initial fund for the college building was mobilized and supported by the people of Mulagumoodu and Thiruthuapuram vicariates, which was historical indeed.
Each vicariate pastoral council visited all the respective parishes and fixed a reasonable amount based on the financial strength and population of the parish. All the parish priests and parish councils co-operated very well along with the Vicar Forane.
On 04.10.2006, the recognition from the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai-04 was received.
On 17.10.2006, the college received the Certificate of Registration from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai -32.
The Inauguration ceremony of the college was held on 25.10.2006, with Poet Mrs. Kanimozhi, daughter of late Chief Minister Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, as the Chief Guest and Most. Rev. Leon Dharmaraj (Late) Bishop as the President.
The approval from Indian Nursing Council to the college was received on 26.10.2006.
The B.Sc. (Nursing) I year class commenced on 01.11.2006.
The college received the affiliation order from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University on 26.12.2006.
Conferment of Minority Status to the college was issued on 10.09.2007.
The stone laying ceremony for St. Xavier’s Multi Specialty hospital was held on 06.07.2009 and Most Rev. Peter Remigus, Bishop of Kottar graced the function.
The Hospital construction work commencement was blessed on 20.11.2016 by the Bishop Most. Rev. Jerome Dhas Varuvel SDB, Kuzhithurai Diocese.
The Post Basic B.Sc. (Nursing), a two year degree programme was started from the academic year 2009 – 2010.
On 01.06.2011, M.Sc. Nursing a programme (two years) for all 5 specialties (total of 25 seats) were started to promote higher education.
Our college provide special scholarships to poor Catholic students of Kuzhithurai Diocese, 10 Catholic meritorious poor students are the beneficiaries every year. We also help the students to get the available scholarships like,
Our college had the privilege of running successfully the GFATM Project by Indian Nursing Council, Catholic Bishop’s Conferences of India and St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Nursing, where the Registered Nurses working at Government hospitals and private hospitals of Kanyakumari District, Tirunelveli District, Tuticorin District & Virudunagar District were trained between 2008 to 2015. (HIV training – 2286 Registered Nurses and TB training 1203 Registered Nurses)
The approval for starting Ph.D programme in Child Health Nursing Department under the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University was received on 14.03.2017.
